I have been actively involved in outreach activities. During my stay in Puerto Rico, I participated in the 4-H and Marine Education Program (2005-2008) of the UPRM, where I brought over 1000 K-12 youths in touch with coral reefs. I have continued to promote science education and at LSU participated at LSUOcean Commotion (2008 – 2013), a hands-on experience that exposes K-12 children to the exciment of marine life.
At LSU, I have supervised six undergraduate students. One of them, Maxine Tan, who came through the Howard Hughes Medical Institute program, studied geographical variation in coral introgression. During 2012 -2013, I mentored Chealse Wallace from Scotlandville Magnet High School (Baton Rouge Louisiana), through EnvironMentors, a mentoring program to strengthen high school student success in science.
Along with the Smithsonian Institution in Panama we have recently developed a hands on experience activity with kinds from the Bocas del Drago area.
